Fan, Air Cooler, Portable AC or Split: How to Stay Cool in a Paris Heatwave

When Paris climbs above 35 °C, four solutions compete for your budget: the fan, the evaporative air cooler, the portable air conditioner and the fixed split system. They do very different things. Here is what each one physically does, and which to choose for your situation.

The verdict at a glance

  • Fan: moves air without cooling it. Feels good up to 28-30 °C, counterproductive above 35 °C (it blows hot air at you).
  • Evaporative air cooler: drops the temperature by 2 to 4 °C in dry air, but adds humidity: weak in a closed apartment and useless in humid heat.
  • Portable air conditioner: the only no-construction device that genuinely cools a room, provided hot air is exhausted through a sealed window hose.
  • Fixed split: the most efficient and quietest, but construction work, co-ownership approval and high installation cost: for patient owners only.

Why a fan is not enough in a heatwave

A fan does not cool the air: it speeds up sweat evaporation, hence the cool feeling. Above 35 °C the mechanism reverses: blowing air hotter than your skin warms the body. This is why health authorities advise against relying on a fan alone during heatwave peaks.

The air cooler, tempting on paper

An evaporative cooler passes air over water: it gains a few degrees in dry, open air, but loads the room with humidity. In a closed Paris apartment, humidity rises fast and the stifling feeling returns. In humid heat it does almost nothing.

The portable air conditioner: real cold, no construction

A portable AC actually cools: it extracts heat from the room and exhausts it outside through a hose. Two conditions: enough power for the surface (a 12,000 BTU unit, 3.4 kW, covers 35 to 59 m²) and a sealing kit around the hose, otherwise hot air flows straight back in through the open window. You can buy one, or rent one delivered and picked up at home for as long as you actually need it: delivery and pickup included in central Paris, no deposit, express delivery in under 2 hours possible depending on available slots.

The split: unbeatable but out of reach for most Parisians

Fixed air conditioning is the most effective and discreet, but it requires an outdoor unit: facade drilling, a co-ownership vote, a certified installer. In Paris the process takes months and often fails, and it is out of reach for renters. The right choice for an owner planning ahead, not for next week's heatwave.

The right choice for your situation

  • 28 °C, minimal budget: fan + shutters closed during the day + night ventilation.
  • Renter, 35 °C heatwave, need relief this week: portable air conditioner, bought or rented. Rental: delivered, picked up, no deposit, nothing to store.
  • Owner, heavy use every summer: consider a split; a portable unit covers the season while you wait for the works.
  • Office, shop or Airbnb: rented portable units, deployed fast and picked up at the end: see our office rental page and Airbnb page.
